Adventures in Scratchboard Art – Instructor Ginny Hutcheson
This 3-week class will consist of adventures in working with different tools on scratchboard. You will learn how to use different strokes to make a picture come alive. We will explore different mediums to color the scratchboard and to learn how to finish and frame. You will also have an introduction to clayboard.
Scratchboard is a two-dimensional, subtractive process to reveal a subject in a black and white painting. Using an X-acto knife or scratch knife, you will scratch off the black India ink on the hardboard to reveal white clay underneath. Scratching on the board will reveal the picture you are developing.
When: Thursdays, February 10, 17, & 24, 2022.

Supplies: Required: A plastic sheet to cover 1/4 of a 6ft table.
Students must bring their own supplies consisting of: A size 5X5, 6×6 or 5×7 scratchboard. Ampersand is a good brand. x-Acto knife or scratch knife and any other scratchboard tools they want to use. Bring 2 copies of a 5×5, 6×6 or 5×7 clear picture matching the size of the board. preferably something with feathers, fur hair or movement.
Optional: Bring a 12×12 piece of heavy cardboard of foam board to mount the scratchboard on while working on the board. A 2 B graphite pencil, white transfer paper, tracing paper, masking tape, kneaded eraser or dusting brush, watercolor pencils or watercolors and brush. Ampersand inks are great for repairing and adding colors. These may be purchased from Arizona Art in Tucson, Dick Click Art or Cheap Joe’s Art online.
Safety Guidelines: Masks are required of all students in this class. 6′ distancing will be maintained.
