Scratchboard – Come and Try It
Instructor: Ginny Hutcheson
Friday, March 19, 2021. 9:00 AM – Noon
The club provides residents with a unique opportunity to try a new art medium without making a large investment in supplies. If you want to try something new this is the workshop for you! You will receive professional instruction and all the necessary supplies for this class.
This class teaches you about the illustrative technique called Scratchboard that uses sharp knives and tools for engraving into a think layer of white China clay that is coated with dark, often black India ink.
Scratchboard is a two-dimensional, subtractive process to reveal a subject in a black and white painting. Using an Z-acto knife or scratch knife, you will scratch off the black India ink on the hardboard to reveal white clay underneath. Scratching on the board will reveal the picture you are developing.
Following this class you can sign up for three more Scratchboard classes if you wish. The Come and Try It class is your introduction and if you like it you can keep learning. The patterns and tools will be provided for you in this first class. Just bring yourself. The subject for this class will be of something like a bird, cat, wild animal. You do not need drawing or painting experience because this class teaches you how to develop the subject from a pattern that is traced onto the scratchboard.
This class is scheduled for Friday, March 19 from 9:00 AM to Noon. $20.00 fee for this class with all supplies provided.
