Using pen and ink to draw on paper uses the same hand motions as using an X-Acto knife or scratch knife on a hard scratchboard to create a piece of art.  The picture comes alive by using hatching, curved hatching, cross-hatching and stippling strokes to build the picture.  Drawing with a pen is very relaxing because once the stroke is down, you can move on to the next stroke.  Your brain isn’t telling you to go back and get the eraser to make a different stroke.  It is very freeing as one does not have time to second guess whether it is right or wrong.  The student will learn to use more or less strokes to develop a picture and how to analyze the picture before starting to make a mark.  Pen and ink pictures can be colored before or after the pen strokes are made.  Black and white pictures are very striking and like wallpaper seams look better the next day.

Bring a table cover and your own sketchbook or even computer paper (something smooth.)  Patterns and some paper will be provided.   Bring a pencil, pen (gel pens work great) and if you need it an eraser with grit like a typewriter eraser.  Technical pens are fun to work with but not necessary for this class.  Patterns will be provided.
