Pastel Pleasures  – Spring SeriesNanci Sheppard
Instructor: Nanci Sheppard
WELCOME TO PASTELS…………….Beginners are welcome.
Pastels are a wonderful medium that is both beautiful and very forgiving. We will be exploring landscapes, portrait, including animals and still life if the interest is there. We will work from photographs, preferably your own. I am a realistic painter so abstract paintings are welcome. There will be some special projects planned and demonstrations on various subjects of interest. We work independently and I give each individual student attention. My focus is on value and color. It is my hope that each student is proud of their finished work. Beginners are always welcome. You may begin the class series at any time.

About pastel:

A pastel is an art medium in the form of a stick, consisting of powdered pigment and a binder. The pigments used in pastels are similar to those used to produce some other colored visual arts media, such as oil paints.

Supplies List:

Paper: Uart sanded 400 grit is preferred, but Canson Mi Tientes, Art Spectrum and Pastel Premier are all good choices and can accept various amounts of layers.

Pastels: this is your most expensive purchase. At least 40 colors are needed. Good brands are Richeson, Sennelier, Rembrandt and Terry Ludwig. Make sure they are chalk pastels and not oil pastels. All brands say soft pastels but if they are inexpensive they tend to be hard. An inexpensive brand for beginners is Master’s Touch sold by Hobby Lobby. All can be found online. Check Amazon, Jerry’s Artarama, Dick Blick and Dakota Pastels. Many companies have sales going on all the time.

Kneaded Eraser, pencil, tape (no colored painter’s tapes), a backboard to attach your photo a bit larger than your paper, tin foil, paper towels, wax paper and a photo you would like to use as inspiration.

If you are a beginner chose a photo with very little going on such as a sunset or a landscape with one tree, etc.

Be aware that as you become more proficient you will want to add more pastels and supplies.

If you have any questions, please contact Nanci Sheppard at nanciwshep2468@gmail.com or call (541) 519-3780.
