In each four week session we will paint one desert plant in a specific style, and focus on the techniques and materials required to achieve that effect. In session 2, we will build on the skills of composition, use of values, color mixing and color theory to plan paintings. In this session we will expand acrylic paint application to explore painting wet in wet, glazing and dry painting, and using resists to complete a watercolor like painting.
Because the key compositional elements have already been completed, beginning painters are encouraged to recreate (or slightly modify) the sample painting as a learning shortcut to practice paint handling and application. Experienced painters may also bring original source material similar to the painting to be practiced if desired.
In session 2 you will learn how to:
-
use compositional “scaffolds” to design a painting
-
use a value map as a compositional strategy
-
choose the best watercolor surfaces for painting with acrylics
-
use traditional watercolor techniques to paint basic features of a Prickly Pear cactus
- Experiment with the effects of warm and cool colors
-
finish, protect and present your painting
