Big Brush Painting in Acrylic
Instructor: Susan Werner
Dates: March 10, 17, 24, 31
Days of Week and Times: Fridays, 9 am -12 noon (4 weeks)
Student Experience Level: Beginner through Experienced
If you have ever wanted to paint simply and directly with big bold strokes and lots of juicy paint, this class will show you how. In this class you will learn how to see the big shapes and values of your
painting subject. You will then practice how to make the brush strokes that will bring your subject alive in a straightforward and expressive way. This is a class that teaches the fundamentals of painting
expressively, to use an economy of strokes to describe shape and a sharp use of values to describe form.
Beginning painters will learn the basics of constructing a painting and how to use brushwork to model forms. Experienced painters who wish to experiment with a looser and bolder style of brushwork will find the exercises presented will offer opportunities to practice painting in a fresher, less traditional approach.
This is not a copy and paint the instructor’s picture type of class. It is a skill building class meant to make you a more expressive painter through practicing loose brushwork and strong values which you
can later apply when you create your own compositional designs.
Our subject matter in class will be still life objects and some floral objects. In each session we will practice how to see and build shapes directly on our canvas and to develop the skill of finding and rendering simple value changes to communicate the drama of light and dark. Use of color will be limited in the first two sessions to reinforce these skills and to learn to use brushwork in an expressive, non-fussy manner. Sessions 3 and 4 will introduce limited color use to explore how color intensity, saturation, and temperature influence the emotional tone of our painting.
