Painting Towards Abstraction

Instructor: Susan Werner

Medium: Acrylic Paints

Dates: April 6, 13, 20, 27
Thursdays, 9 am -12 noon (4 weeks)

What is abstract art and how does one make an abstract painting that communicates your intention and moves your viewers? Making abstract art requires us as artists to deeply investigate the basis of our art, and to make decisions about the type of abstraction, the amount of abstraction and the methods of abstraction we will use to paint our subject. Our subject may be based in realism and objectivity, or based in non-objective and non-realism, things, impressions or ideas…or anywhere in between!

In this class we will explore how to take a subject based in realism and deconstruct it in several ways to apply the principles of abstraction. We will apply the design principles of point, line, form and shape
(and their influence on space), color, value and texture as a framework to construct and compose our abstracted works. This class will introduce you to different approaches you can use to abstract realistic
subjects and compose successful paintings. You will also learn how to begin a non-objective painting based on an idea, imagined location or feeling and craft a composition that communicates your intention.

Beginner and more experienced painters will learn about how the basic elements of design can be used as a road map for seeing, responding to and re-interpreting realistic subject matter into abstract designs. This approach will provide many opportunities for reflection and growth as we discover what is artistically significant and important to us and why this is so. We will explore our personal symbols, preferred colors, recurring themes and develop our own expressive “language” that will inform our work as we play with whatever shows up.

At the conclusion of this class, participants will have a greater understanding of how principles of abstraction can be applied to their own art for greater personal clarity and enhanced creativity. AND each will have a portfolio of painted abstracts, full of experimental ideas to use going forward into many painting adventures!
