Desert Beauty: Painting a Barrel Cactus in a Pot
Learn Collage and Mixed Media Acrylic Painting Techniques

Student experience Level: Beginner, but anyone wishing to learn to use acrylic media is welcome
This series of classes will continue to build on the skills of composition, use of values, color mixing and color theory to plan paintings. In this session we will expand acrylic paint application to explore collage/painting techniques. We will learn to use a gelli plate to mono-print unique collage papers to use in our painting.
In this last session, beginner painters may choose to reproduce the barrel cactus painting presented, or may choose to create their own “cactus in a pot” composition.
In this class series you will build on the basics of sessions 1 and 2 and learn how to:

use the “medallion” or “portrait” composition scaffold to create an interesting composition

create a values map to guide the placement of collage on your design

use gesso and watercolor paper to create a mixed media substrate for collage

use texture to add interest to your composition

create your own collage papers using acrylic paint on a gelli plate

use acrylic gel medium as an adhesive and as a paint additive for translucent effects

finish, protect and present your painting.
